THE SCOUT MOVEMENT IN GUYANA
The Scout Movement is an international, non-polictical organisation. It was planted as an acorn on Brownsea Island, England in 1907, germinated and grown to a mammoth oak with the main tap root in Geneva, Switzerland. It is a youth organisation; that is , it was founded and it operates to assist young people to achieve their full potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.
Scouting came to Guyana just two (2) years after it was founded in england. The first Troop was formed in the Queen's college compound. From there the Movement moved to all parts of the country - in thge North West District, Pomeroon, Essequibo Coast & Islands, Bartica, Potaro; in the Rupununi; to all parts of the West Coast and West Bank, Demerara; East coast and East Bank Demerara; to Linden; West Coast Berbice, Canje and Corentyne Districts; Upper Berbice as ar as Kwakwani. By the early '70's the membership had reached over 3,000. Most of the Groups/Troops were attached to schools and denominational churches.
1969 was Guyana's great year in Scouting. In August, 1969 Guyana hosted the 4th Caribbean Jamboree. Not only Scouts fromt he Caribbean attended that Jamboree, we had Scouts from the U.K., Canada, France, U.S.A. and Australia. The venue for that great event was the national park. The memory of that event still lingers in the minds of those who participated.
The Association was represented at several World jamborees including those held in the U.K., Canada, U.S.A., Holland, France and Korea. It has also participated in each Caribbean Jamboree.
Our adult leaders receive specialised training to fit them for their particular functions. During our early years some of our Leaders went to Gilwell Park, England to be trained. With training facilities spreading out some leaders went to Hazzlewood Park, Barbados, Paxvale, Trinidad and others were trained at our own Camp Jubilee. Each of the courses was a mini-international gathering.
In Guyana, the Movement was managed by the National Scout Council which met as often as was necessary. The A.G.M. was held in March. At that meeting the Executive Committee was elected. Up to 1970 the Governor/Governor General of the Colony was the President and Chief Scout.
When Guyana became a Republic, the constitution of the Association as changed and the office of President became elective. The elected President was also the Chief Scout. Under this new system the first elected President was Sir Kenneth Stoby. Other past Presidents are Mr.R.C. Butler, Mr. A.A. Peroune and Mr. Frank Emery. The current President is Mr. Peter Fraser, a Rotarian.
