getting a message that says "cannot connect to host". What could be causing
this?

Common Modem/dial- up errors
Q: When I try to dial up I get error "computer not receiving a response from the
modem", "disconnected due to hardware failure" errors 633,630, 692 .
Modem not configured correctly, Reinstall modem drivers or modem may be
damaged, call us for assistance.
Q No dial tone error 680
Ensure that the phone line is connected to the "line" port at the back of your
computer or it may be a faulty phone line.
Q Why do I get dropped connections?
The stability of an connection is affected by the quality of the communication
that occurs between two modems; the clearer the communication, the more
stable the connection. Some of the variables that affect the way modems
communicate with each other are as follows:
- The clarity of your phone line.
The signal on an phone line can be degraded as a result of weather, the distance between your home and the phone company’s switching equipment, electrical interference, or anything else that affects the transmission of electrical interference, or anything else that affects the transmission of electrical impulses along copper wire. If you hear static on the line when you attach a regular phone, it is a sure sign that you have noisy line, but the lack of static is not proof that your phone line is clear enough to establish a high speed connection if your home is a long distance call from the phone company’s switching equipment. - You may have a defective jack.
Try plugging your modem into a different phone jack in your home - The compatibility of the two modems.
Despite the fact that modems communicate according to standardized protocols, modem manufacturers implement those protocols differently. Consequently, a modem manufactured by one company may not communicate well with a modem manufactured by a competitor. To increase the likelihood that your modem is performing optimally, make sure that you have the latest modem drivers installed and are using the right modem initialization string. - The configuration of your TCP/IP software.
Your TCP/IP software tells your computer how to communicate with your modem. If it is configured incorrectly, it will produce errors that will degrade the stability of your connection. - How well your TCP/IP software loaded into the system at
start-up.
Sometimes the quality of a connection can be improved simply by restarting your computer. Chronic problems with your TCP/IP software, however, may be rectified by uninstalling and reinstalling the TCP/IP system software. - Additional telephony devices (fax, phones, answering machines,
splitters, etc.) may be producing interference on the phone line,
even if they’re in a different room.
Try disconnecting them and trying to establish a connection again.
Q I have a 56K modem but can't connect at the highest rated speed
Your modem will connect to us at the highest possible speed based on your
phone line conditions.
Certain modems have a better track record connecting at higher speeds than others. Generally, brand name (USR, Supra, Hayes, Zoom, etc) modems provide better connections than OEM or generic-brand modems.Very few people can get a consistent 28,800 (V.34 modem) or 33,600 (33.6k modem) bps connection.
Speeds of 28,800 bps or faster, require pristine line quality along the entire length of the connection.
You can also try:

You can also try:
- Calling from a different location. Maybe your neighbour or a friend at another village etc. If your connection improves significantly then you know that the problem is with your location. If you encounter the same low connection rates, the problem may be resulting from impairments along the lines running to the local telephone company or within your home or office. Your telephone company may be able to help.
- Dropped connections can occur when there is a sharp decrease in line quality during a call. V.34 modems will switch to rates as low as 4800 bps to compensate for these changes.
- If the loss of quality is extremely severe, they will drop the \ connection.
Q: HELP! I get disconnected while actively using the Internet? What could
the problem be?
Make sure your idle timer is turned off.
- Win95 users go to Control Panel, Internet.
- Click on the Connection Tab.
- Uncheck the Idle Timer if it is checked.
- Make sure you do not have call-waiting on the phone line your modem uses. If you do, turn it off when dialing the Internet.
- If you can hear any noise on your line, then its very likely you will not be able to connect reliably. If you suspect line noise, give your phone company a call and ask to have your line checked for noise.
- Replace the phone line from the back of your modem to the wall. Some low grade cable can cause problems.
- Try calling from a different location. This is an easy way to see if it is your phone line conditions that are causing the disconnects.
- In rare cases, modem incompatibility can cause random disconnects. We've seen this with some older generic modems.
- Your computer can be infected with a virus
